The Brihnamumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in its budget this year announced to implement “tactical urbanism” across the city.
Under the initiative for Tactical Urbanism the various projects are proposed to implement for students’ safety in campus and surrounding of BMC Schools.
This decision was taken after a successful pilot outside a private school in Byculla. The plan entails making campuses student safe with pedestrian-friendly roads and footpaths surrounding the schools.
For this, BMC has allocated ₹50 crores so that authorities can undertake various interventions to improve public space through actions that result in reduced traffic.
• To improve Safety of students
• To draw plans for well utilization of unutilized space of school campus and surrounding of schools
• To Consider factors of play and learning in the design.
• To develop positive relation between school and community.
• To encourage students for walking and biking.
• To arrange parking space in the campus and off the campus.
• To improve facilities for pedestrian
Explaining further, the BMC Chief I S Chahal stated that the objective was to give a safe environment for children and teachers to access the school in a clutter free foot path with restricted vehicular movement in these zones. Since the pilot has been successful and received very positively by the school community, in this current financial year the project will be scaled up and efforts will be made to make a perimeter of 500 meters safe for students and school community to walk and access the school in a safe way.
The roads and traffic department has done a pilot of safe school concept in collaboration with Ward Office and Traffic police in Byculla last year.
For those unversed, the tactical urbanism idea is the brainchild of state guardian minister Aaditya Thackeray.
