The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had earlier clarified that the permission is not required to change the layout of his house, like reducing the size of a bedroom or expanding the hall.

This decision was aimed at curbing harassment cases. There were complaints about municipal ward-level employees threatening, blackmailing and extorting money from flat owners carrying out such repairs and renovation. However, not many people are aware of these policies.

In order to raise the awareness, the BMC has started a campaign in Andheri (East) and Bandra East and West divisions of the municipality.

Many billboards and posters have been set up in the municipal offices in the suburban area. Soon, such boards will be placed in departmental buildings, public places too. Regarding this, Parag Masurkar, Deputy Commissioner has said that the purpose is to explain in simple language what documents are required for obtaining permission for which works, its fulfilment, duration etc. Moreover, the civic body permission is also not required to install solar panels on the roofs of buildings.

The requirement of permission for any change in the layout of a property (without touching the building structure) had been eliminated and the onus of any structural damage to the building following such changes would lie on the architect who certified the changes.
