Iqbal Singh Chahal, Mumbai Municipal Commissioner, in a statement has stated that the civic body is against the idea of night curfew during the Christmas or the New Years’ time, however, the citizens should not create havoc as a result of it and force the civic authorities to impose it.

Earlier on Saturday, December 12, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that it would impose night curfew to ensure the positivity rate continues to fall and the number of new cases of coronavirus remains in control during Christmas and New Year.

As citizens gather all over the city during the time of festivities, the civic body has remained conflicted whether to impose a night curfew or not in view of the pandemic. However, reports state that the Maharashtra government has rejected the demand and instead, instructed the citizens to be careful when in public, thereby ensuring rules are adhered to in order to avoid the spread of coronavirus. Over the last few weeks, citizens have been flouting the rules by not wearing masks or not maintaining distance, and this has raised concerns for the civic body and the government.

Meanwhile, as per reports, at least 500 teams of five trained personnel each will be deployed for administering the COVID-19 vaccine in the city, the civic body informed on Friday. The first to get vaccinated will be health workers followed by frontline workers, people above the age of 50 and those suffering from co-morbidities, it said in a release. The Maharashtra government last month formed a task force to manage the distribution and administration of the COVID-19 vaccine in the state, with a task force set up at the city level.
