On Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished illegal extensions of nearly 50 stall owners outside Jogeshwari railway station in order to decongest the area.

As per the Times of India report, some shopkeepers allegedly slapped two civic officials who were overseeing the demolition. The civic body demolished three shops which had encroached open space in the east and one shop which had come upon in space between two buildings.

Assitant municipal commissioner Prashant Sapkale told TOI,

It was a crucial approach road to the railway station and there were complaints about it being congested. There were some hiccups as shopkeepers started physically harming our staff on duty. We registered a police complaint."

Local activist Nicholas Almeida pointed out that because there is a school and a college close to the railway station, there is a rise in commuters over the past few years. He added that during peak hours, the extra rush adds to the congestion.
