The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) carried out a demolition drive in P North Block on October 26. In an official statement, the civic body said that it cleared multiple encroachments on a 6-acre land plot belonging to Atharva Mahavidyalaya, located in the Marve area of Mumbai.

In order a park on the 6.91-acre land, 63 furniture stores and huts were demolished by the BMC.

The civic authority also claimed that this land was originally planned for the use of sports activities. It was supposed to be transferred to the BMC via the Collector's office. MP Gopal Shetty was present for the procedure.

The BMC said that in the last 20 years, there has been extensive encroachment onto the property. The clearance of unauthorised stores and dwellings was deemed required for the building of the Theme Park project. A Vedic-themed park based on Noida’s ‘Ved Vann’ will be set up here.

In July 2023, notices of eviction were sent to the proprietors of the affected shops and huts. The Suburban District Magistrate's Office had transferred the property for the Vedic Park to the Municipal Corporation. However, removing the encroachments was an essential first step. As directed, Assistant Commissioner of the P North Ward Kiran Dighavkar and Deputy Commissioner Vishwas Shankarwar oversaw the encroachment removal operation.

The civic body took a call and stated that the eight shops that had proper documents of ownership would be offered an alternative place or financial compensation on the department level.

Around 14 engineers and 62 employees participated in demolishing the dwellings at the plot in Marve. For clearing the way, three JCBs and 60 dumpers were deployed. After the encroachments were demolished, the plot is set for levelling work and further developments.

Earlier in October, BMC undertook a major demolition drive on Swami Vivekanand Road for traffic management. As part of this effort, 39 constructions were taken down at the intersections of Underai and Dargah in Malad, as well as Chincholi Phatak. It is anticipated that the destruction will facilitate the road's 90-foot enlargement and improve traffic flow along this section.

The P North ward office of the BMC has launched a massive demolition drive to clear the way for road widening. On SV Road, some 253 structures that were causing traffic jams have been demolished. Ten labourers, two JCBs, and a team of seven engineers from P North ward worked on the structures at Chincholi Phatak and Underai Road that were impacted by road widening.

On the same route BMC will demolish 76 structures in near future. Two months ago, the civic body demolished the extension of Malad’s iconic M.M. Mithaiwala sweet shop, and other well-known snack places near Malad railway station and widened Anand road.

A new deadline has been set by the BMC for the opening of the Gokhale bridge in Andheri to traffic. By February 15, 2024, two-way single-lane traffic will be permitted on the bridge, according to municipal officials. BMC has established a deadline for the Gokhale bridge for the fifth time.
