The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has introduced stricter fire safety enforcement measures for commercial establishments.
It is pertinent to note that this move comes in the aftermath of the tragic fire at Delhi's Flourish Stay hotel in Malviya Nagar that claimed 21 lives.
The civic body has abolished the previously allowed 120-day grace period for businesses to comply with fire safety requirements. Hotels, restaurants, bars, and banquet halls will now be given only two weeks to one month to rectify any deficiencies in their fire safety systems.
The move follows heightened concerns over fire preparedness after the June 3 incident in Delhi. Under the Maharashtra Fire Service Act, establishments that fail to meet safety standards within the revised deadline could face disconnection of essential utilities such as electricity and water, effectively forcing them to suspend operations.
Alongside the policy change, Mumbai's fire department has intensified inspections across the city. Since January 2026, officials have inspected 428 hotels, restaurants, bars, and party halls. Among them, 17 establishments were found either lacking mandatory fire safety equipment or keeping existing systems non-functional, resulting in the issuance of notices.
For comparison, throughout 2025, authorities inspected 2,721 establishments and issued notices to 22 violators.
The crackdown has also focused on the use of unauthorized LPG cylinders in commercial kitchens, a recurring safety concern. During 2025, fire officials seized 190 illegal cylinders from hotels and restaurants. In the first few months of 2026 alone, another 58 cylinders have already been confiscated, indicating increased vigilance and enforcement.
The stricter measures reflect Mumbai's effort to prevent similar tragedies by ensuring that commercial establishments adhere to fire safety regulations and maintain operational safety systems at all times.
