According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to extend the deadline for putting up Marathi signboards in all shops to June 30.
Earlier, the BMC had instructed all establishments and shops in Mumbai to mount the Marathi signboards in the Devanagari script by May 31. Following this, on Tuesday, May 31, the civic body declared that it would survey the city for the next 10 days. During this, it was slated to take action against those who did not adhere to the order.
Based on accounts, now, however, the deadline has been extended to June 30. This reportedly comes after requests from traders, officials mentioned.
Previously in May, officials were quoted in narratives elaborating on how they will impose a fine of INR 2,000 on each of the employees of those shops that do not put up Marathi signboards from June 10.
These developments came in the aftermath of the Maharashtra legislature approving the amendment of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) Act, 2017.
Following this amendment, in April, the BMC declared a notification highlighting that all business establishments and shops in Mumbai must mandatorily have their names written in Marathi and Devanagari script, in addition to any other language.
The said notification had elucidated how the Marathi letter's font size should be bigger in contrast to the size of any other language on the board and be prominently visible. Back then the deadline for implementation was May 31.
