The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) deadline for commercial establishments and shops in Mumbai to have Marathi signboards ended on Tuesday, May 31. Therefore, the BMC is now preparing itself to enable compliance. According to accounts, a team of civic officials will commence inspecting all shops in Mumbai from the second week of June to assess compliance.

Based on accounts, violators will be fined INR 2,000 for each person employed in their establishment or shop. However, at the same time, the trader's association have asked for an extension because a considerable number of shops have not made the necessary alterations.

It has been reported that in accordance with the amendment in the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Condition of Service) Act, 2017, it is compulsory for all shops in the city to display Marathi signboards in the Devanagari script.

In addition to this, the font size of the Marathi language's letters should be prominently visible and be bigger than others utilized on the signboard. Shops and establishments that fall within this order include grocery shops, garment stores, hotels, restaurants, bars and theatres, regardless of size and location, narratives mentioned.

Shops and establishments had a deadline of May 31 to adhere to the rule. Now that the date has passed, the civic body will commence inspection and act against flouters, reports cited.

BMC officials have been quoted in accounts elaborating on how a team of 75 inspectors will visit their respective wards and inspect the signboards of all establishments and shops. They will check signages in Marathi as per the rule. Further, the officials voiced that they will file cases against them in court and they will be fined there.

Accounts suggest that the entire procedure would take a week or two, but Central government offices are exempted from this regulation, officials claim.
