On Wednesday, April 6, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that the names of all shops should be first written in Marathi, in capital letters, prior to it being written in any other language. Apart from this, the civic authority has remarked that the font size in Marathi should not be smaller than the size of letters in any other language, stated a press release by the BMC.

What this means is that the font size of Marathi should be bigger than that of the other language. Additionally, liquor shops and bars should not make use of notable personalities, historical figures or forts on their signboards, the release remarked.

If these rules are violated, the owner of the shop or establishment under scrutiny will be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017.

This move by the civic body comes in the aftermath of the Maharashtra cabinet approving the amendment to the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Act, 2017, enabling shops and establishments with less than 10 workers to display their nameplates in Marathi

The statement of the BMC reportedly read that in "pursuance of the provisions of the Act" the civic authority has appealed to all the merchants in the city to display their nameplates on their shops or establishments first in the Devanagari script of Marathi and then in any other language.

Recently, the BMC also issued a circular, asking schools in the city to display their names in Marathi. Earlier, the University of Mumbai also asked all their affiliated colleges to put their names in Marathi. In addition to this, a bill was also passed in the assembly making Marathi compulsory in official works of the local authorities in Maharashtra
