According to the latest reports, Mumbai University has asked its affiliated colleges to not just use English but also utilize Marathi in official communications. On Friday, April 1, a university circular was reportedly issued that asked all colleges to display their names in bold Marathi letters as well as in visible locations. 

Apart from this, it also told the colleges to make the admission prospectus accessible to students in Marathi. Moreover, the circular asked colleges to proclaim all official correspondence and students' notices in Marathi. Colleges have been informed to prioritize the local language in college workshops and seminars. 

Additionally, colleges have been asked to follow Marathi Language Day yearly on February 27 by curating debates, and competitions, among other events. The directive was reportedly issued by the university registrar Sudhir Puranik who mentioned that these directives were in line with previous government circulars. 

Based on narratives, the said notification is applicable to all government, private, aided, unaided, undergraduate as well as post-graduate colleges affiliated with the university. This has been a demand of the Yuva Sena, Shiv Sena's student wing. It has been reported that certain colleges are already adhering to some directives passed by the University of Mumbai.
