The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been directed by the National Green Tribunal principal bench at Delhi to pay INR 28 crore in three months, highlighted reports.
They have been asked to compensate the same to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) over the discharge of sewage into water bodies.
According to reports, the NGT was spearheaded by Justice A K Goel who elaborated that the civic authority could proceed with the remedial measures on sewage disposal promptly. However, they are liable to pay INR 28 crore as studied by the CPCB in its report.
The order disposed of an application by Vanashakti, an NGO for the enforcement of an NGT order of remedial action in October 2020. This was against the discharge of untreated effluents into water bodies.
Based on accounts, the NGO was represented by Advocate Zaman Ali, Atmaram Nadkarni senior counsel BMC, Aniruddha Kulkarni CPCB, as well as Mansi Joshi MPCB in the green tribunal.
The NGT mentioned that its order to dependent on the verdict of the apex court in the matter that is pending before it.
The order states that the money can be spent on the restoration of the environment by curating a restoration plan that has to be approved and monitored by the CPCB. Additionally, the CPCB can decide on the submitted plan in a month of submission.
