The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a major drive to curb garbage dumping in Mumbai.
A total of 147 ‘Garbage Vulnerable Points’ have been identified in 26 wards of Mumbai and a sector-wise action plan has been prepared for them. Increased garbage collection, CCTV surveillance, penal action and awareness campaigns will be implemented at these places.
According to the BMC, the maximum number of 37 places have been reported in the M/West zone. This includes Cheda Nagar, Tilak Nagar and its vicinity in Chembur. It was followed by 12 places in Malad and Malvani areas in the P/North zone. 10 places each have been found in Dadar, Dharavi in the G/North zone and Ghatkopar in the N zone. 9 places each have been reported in Deonar and Mankhurd in the M/East zone and Matunga, Sion and Wadala areas in the F/North zone.
Of the 6,300 to 6,500 metric tonnes of solid waste generated in Mumbai every day, a large portion of it is collected from these sensitive locations. These locations are mainly located in congested areas or densely populated slums, where garbage collection vehicles have difficulty reaching. As a result, these locations have become centres of continuous uncontrolled garbage accumulation, which is having a serious impact on cleanliness, public health and the environment.
To address this problem permanently, the BMC has given special responsibility to departmental staff. Each location will be mapped to find out the reasons behind garbage accumulation and punitive action will be taken against those who dump garbage illegally. CCTV cameras will also be installed to prevent further garbage accumulation and garbage collection services will be increased.
