The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a new initiative to increase citizen participation in keeping mumbai clean. Residents can now report garbage hotspots and dumping-prone areas in their neighbourhoods through the Mumbai Clean League platform.

Here is how to report garbage accumulation:

1. Residents must register on the Mumbai Clean League website with their mobile number.

2. Users are required to enter details such as their name, address, pin code, and ward number into the portal.

3. Then, citizens can click on the “Garbage Hotspot” option on the left side of the screen.

4. Users must then select the “Register Hotspot” option to file a complaint.

5. Residents need to provide details including the locality name, ward number, and a nearby landmark.

6. The platform also allows photographs of the garbage site and add comments related to the complaint.

7. After a complaint is registered, the BMC will carry out cleaning and waste collection work at the location.

The BMC said that cleaning activities and waste collection work will be carried out after the hotspot is registered on the platform. The civic body has also identified 162 recurrent garbage hotspots across the city.

According to the BMC, garbage continues to reappear at these locations even after repeated clean-up operations. These sites were identified during inspections and through complaints received from citizens.

The civic administration has directed ward offices to immediately clear these locations and take stricter action to stop further illegal dumping. Officials also observed that several of these areas do not have enough community garbage bins. Due to the lack of proper disposal facilities, some residents were found dumping waste outside designated collection points.

The BMC has now fixed ward-level targets to deal with the issue. The Municipal Commissioner will personally monitor the progress made by each ward office. A ward-wise review conducted by the civic body showed uneven pressure across Mumbai.

Some wards reported as many as 28 garbage-vulnerable spots, while a few other wards recorded lower numbers. Areas such as Bandra West, Khar West, and Santacruz West were found to have five such locations each.

Over the past month, municipal commissioner Bhide conducted inspections at several areas and solid waste management chowkis along with civic officials. During the visits, construction and demolition waste were found dumped along roadsides.
