Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has authorized a tender notice this month to procure five fire bikes which can carry up to 40 litres of water and other firefighting equipment.

After the 2016 Kalbadevi fire, the civic body had decided to introduce the fire-bike concept in order to navigate the overcrowded areas in a bid to decrease response time. Moreover, the fire department has also held a demonstration in 2016 of one such modified bike at the Byculla command centre, where a Royal Enfield Himalayan 410CC bike was modified to a firefighting vehicle.

As per reports, the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) had tabled a proposal regarding the same before the standing committee last year. However, the proposal was referred back, as a single bidder had expressed interest. Following this, the MFB re-opened the tender earlier this month. Since the response to the tender has been low in the past, the BMC has opened tenders for five bikes on the trial basis. If it manages to receive an adequate response, it will procure 24 bikes, one for each of the administrative wards.

Meanwhile, earlier on December 27, due to a massive fire inside a temple in Kandivali, Mumbai, two people died whereas one was injured in the accident. According to the preliminary information, the incident took place in a Sai Baba temple at Bandar Pakhadi Road in the Charkop area. Moreover, the fire was reported at 4.14 AM and was doused by the Mumbai Fire Brigade by 4.39 am, according to sources.

The deceased have been identified as Subhash Khode and Yuvaraj Pawar, both aged 25. They were both declared dead on arrival by the hospital. On the other hand, Mannu Radheshyam Gupta, who was rescued by the Fire Brigade has been shifted to Sion hospital for further treatment after receiving initial care at the Shatabdi Hospital.
