In an incident that occurred on Saturday, a BMC labour dies and four other get injured due to suffocation while cleaning the water chamber located at Grand Road’s Nana Chowk.

It is reported that the incident happened when they had to climb down into the chamber to check for the leaks and cleaning purposes. The Mumbai Fire Brigade team rescued all five labourers, but the 40-year-old Rakesh Nizab was declared dead on being taken to BYL Nair hospital. Other four deceased - Balasaheb (47), Umesh Pawar (42), Suresh Pawar(42) and Shantaram Bhakte (47) have been reportedly injured.

Talking about the same, Dr Ramesh Bharmal, dean, BYL Nair hospital, said that one of the labourers were admitted in the ICU and three were in the general ward According to the police. The cause of Nizab’s death hasn’t been revealed yet and will only be confirmed after the postmortem. He is a resident of Mahim and is survived by two daughters.

Sharing a thought about the death, a civic official said that death was due to the suffocation, while they were cleaning the chamber after de-watering. The chamber was also examined post the incident and no poisonous gases were noted inside the chamber.

An accidental death report has been filed by the police and the investigation is being performed to understand the negligence, post which the action will be taken.
