Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has reportedly completed only 16 per cent of the developmental work with regards to laying new sewerage lines across Mumbai, in the past four years.

One of the main reasons for the discharge of untreated sewage in water bodies as well as seas is the poor progress in the construction of the new sewer lines.

According to reports, the civic body had earlier set a target of constructing 93.68 km of sewer lines under the Municipal Sewerage Improvement Project (MSIP) in the areas that were newly developed or redeveloped over the years. In the last four years, however, the BMC has completed work on only 15.5 km. In recent developments, the BMC has informed that the civic workers are to complete the remaining 78.17-km sewer line in the next two years.

On the other hand, the BMC had earlier initiated the digging of rainwater percolation pits at civic gardens, reported the Times of India. Presently, at 70 gardens the pits have been dug, but according to an official 250 additional areas have been found where these pits will now be dug. 860 gardens in Mumbai are open to all at no cost.

Superintendent of the garden department, Jitendra Pardeshi elaborated that the pits are dug in those areas in gardens where rainwater becomes static. Apart from the construction of these pits, a board is on the site which explains to the locals the benefits of the said activity, he elaborated.
