The Birhanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking to designate new road safety auditors for Rs 20,000/km, reported the Times of India. It is hoping to nominate a new agency for a duration of three years, the cost of which is said to be approximately Rs 3.15 cr.

A first of its kind step, the BMC will be nominating an agency for audits regarding road safety. However, it has received backlash regarding the financial aspects of the plan from the opposition.

According to reports, a senior civic official has enunciated that the agency will not just provide comprehensive information on pedestrian and traffic movement, but will also suggest steps to strengthen road safety. An analysis will be undertaken of vehicular and pedestrian traffic to derive reports on accident-prone areas in Mumbai.

The civic authority has detected 39 accident-prone spots in the city, claimed an official from the BMC.

Since it is believed that accidents occur due to substandard road design, the auditors will assist in the removal of design flaws that lead to mishaps. Additionally, the auditors will also suggest changes in road designs.

Personale from the civic authority states that four firms have responded to them and have quoted Rs 21,000-29,000/km. The BMC has then picked three firms for Rs 20,000/km. Accounts also state that the BMC will be incurring expenses worth nearly Rs 3.15 cr since the road length in Mumbai is 454km, 325km and 770km in the eastern and western suburbs, respectively.

The BMC in 2015 had resolved to not work with third-party auditors for inspecting road work after some employees of certain firms were knotted in a road repair scam worth crores.
