Last month, a tree fell on a man at the Mumbai Marathi Granth Sangrahalay Road which led to his death. The incident has caused the authorities to discuss the gravity of the issue of tree-fall in the city. BMC intends to curb the issue before the arrival of monsoon and has started roofing trees which possess the danger of falling off.

However, during monsoon, the trees and branches may fall even after taking precaution. Hence, the residents of Mumbai may face problems from almost 1.75 lakh trees across the city.

Under the guidance of additional commissioner Vijay Singhal, a special meeting of forest department was convened. In the meeting, Singhal ordered the Garden department to take necessary action regarding the issue before the monsoon arrives. Responding to which, the Garden department requested BMC to cut down the damaged trees before the monsoon.

As per a count, currently, there are a total of 29.75 lakh trees in Mumbai. Out of which, almost 15.64 lakh trees are located in private premises. Whereas, 11.25 lakh trees are situated in government-owned areas. Apart from this, 1.85 lakh trees are on the roads across Mumbai and the remaining trees are located in different parks in Mumbai.
