Recently, the Swacch Bharat Survekshan website ranked cities according to its cleanliness. Mumbai bagged the 49th spot among the 425 cities and Navi Mumbai bagged the 9th spot. In 2018, Mumbai had bagged the 18th spot and this year it fell down drastically.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) stated that Mumbai would have been ranked at a better position if the dividers in the city would have been cleaner. It is a common sight to see the dividers filled with garbage and paan stains. The BMC authorities recently passed a tender where a special machine will be used to clean the 250km divider in Mumbai and it will cost ₹1.5 crores annually.

However, activists claimed that it would be a waste of taxpayers money and BMC should rather focus on improving the infrastructure of roads, filling potholes etc. Notably, Indore was ranked as the cleanest city followed by Bhopal, Chandigarh, New Delhi and Vijayawada bagging the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th spots respectively.
