Those times are not so far when the city will be referred to as the ‘New York’ of India. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to allow 31 malls and four hot-spots in the city to remain open 24/7 and has sought the opinion of the police commissioner for the same.

Among the list are 31 malls including Phoenix Market City at Kurla and High Street Phoenix at Lower Parel, Infinity Mall at Malad, Oberoi Mall at Goregaon and Globus Mall at Bandra, as well as four areas in Mumbai CSTM, the Gateway of India, Churchgate station and airport.

The Maharashtra Shops and Establishments (Regulation of Employment and Service Condition) Act, 2017, notified in December, has been referred for the move. The Act provided for shops, hotels, restaurants, malls and establishments of the like to remain open 24/7 if not restricted by the state in public interest. The Act, however, excludes bars, pubs, wine shops and discotheques which currently have restricted timings.

The BMC commissioner will prepare the list in confirmation with the police and decide the further course depending on the experience. After seeking the police’s nod, the civic body will write to the state government about the proposal.
