The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is considering installing flood gauges with sensors across Mumbai to ascertain the levels of waterlogging during rains, reported the Indian Express. To begin with, the civic authority will put up the flood gauges at nearly 100 locations. It is anticipated that this project could commence this season.

Officials from the civic body were quoted in the account elaborating on how presently there is not any mechanism to comprehend Mumbai flood levels. In accordance with the data available, the city has 386 flooding spots. From these, the BMC has taken measures of mitigation at 280. Officials claim that work on the remaining flooding spots is underway.

Based on the narrative, the flood gauge sensors are hoped to assist the BMC in planning and tackling flooding with greater efficacy. This will be through means of collecting localised data that includes the likes of waterlogging in the area, time taken for the water to recede, rainfall amount in the area along with time, amongst others.

Through this data, enhancement of the stormwater drainage system and other schemes can be done. In addition to this, the sensors could send alerts to the BMC's Disaster Management Cell about the flood levels in the said area, as cited in the report.

Presently, the civic authority has put up flood gauge sensors in the Mithi River. With this officials remarked that for this season of Mumbai rains, the BMC will also put up 380 de-watering pumps across the city.
