With the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections anticipated to be held in February 2022, the civic authority has stated that it is “well prepared” to conduct a lottery for ward reservations in December after the procedure of recommendations and objections for the reorganization of the electoral seats is finished, reported the Times of India.

According to the report, however, those political parties and candidates who have begun campaigning, keeping the present electoral wards in mind are anxious. Since they fear that if the reservation on a seat changes, another candidate will be nominated.

The Maharashtra cabinet, last week undertook the decision to surge the BMC’s corporators strength to 236 from 227. It was back in 2002 when the number of electoral wards was increased in the city when the numbers rose to 227 from 221.

On the other hand, employing a lottery system, the reservation of corporator seats are altered every five years. In the previous civic elections, the ward reservation process was completed by early October 2016, and the polls were conducted in February 2017.

The account quoted Suresh Kakani the additional municipal commissioner who elaborated on how once they receive communication from the state government regarding redrawing ward boundaries, the administration at the civic level will take a week to finish the procedure of reorganization. Adding that the average voter count in each ward could decrease and the reorganization will be done by GIS mapping as well as physical verification if the need arises.
