According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed to the Maharashtra government to acquire the debt-ridden Seven Hills Hospital by approaching the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT). If the state government isn't keen, the civic authority could itself go for the takeover, said BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal on Wednesday, January 19.

Seven Hills Hospital is situated in Andheri and is one of the largest COVID-19 treatment facilities with more than 1,800 beds. It was acquired by the BMC under the Disaster Management Act.

Chahal was quoted by the Indian Express elaborating on how the aggregate debt of the hospital is nearly INR 1,500 crore. Adding that the civic body has told the state medical education department to approach the NCLT to bid and acquire it. He further remarked that if the state is not willing then the BMC can go for it too.

Chahal believes that if the hospital is acquired by the state it can be operated along the lines of Delhi's AIIMS. He, however, added that many councillors are of the opinion that instead of incurring expenditure worth INR 1,500 crore on the hospital, the civic authority or the state could build another one at the same cost.
