According to reports, the black fungal infection, Mucormycosis that had worsened the impact of the second wave of coronavirus in India, driven by the Delta variant of COVID-19, has not disappeared from COVID-19 wards in Mumbai.

Based on accounts, a 70-year-old was admitted to a south Mumbai hospital with coronavirus on January 12 developed mucormycosis on the third day and needed an elaborate removal of tissues surgery on the cheeks and near the eyes.

A narrative by the Times of India quoted Dr Honey Savla, internal medicine specialist with Wockhardt Hospital situated near Mumbai Central station, elaborating on how the patient could also need surgery. Adding that when the patient was brought to the hospital, his blood sugar level was 532.

Therefore, conclusions have been drawn that the cause for mucormycosis wasn't the misuse of steroids but uncontrolled diabetes. Savla added that the patient has no pneumonia in his lungs and is not on steroids. However, he is their first patient with the said condition during the third wave. The account remarked that the swelling on the patient's cheeks and eyelid caused the doctors to suspect the fungal infection.

In other developments, On Monday, January 17, the state directed its districts and corporations to use Molnupiravir, the antiviral drug with extreme caution and only in select patients, reports mentioned.
