Social media has become one of the most prevalent means of communication in the present world. It has bridged the gap between two parties and has also made the interaction more indulgent. Similarly, now the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has felt the need to make various enhancements on social media.

Accordingly, BMC has put forward a proposal in the corporation for approval. The proposal states that the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) will be developing a central social media platform for all departments of the municipality.

Accordingly, a separate MCGM account will be created for each department in order to provide information, updates, and programs of various department offices to the citizens. However, the proposal has caused a stir as the opposition feels that the civic body is not only resorting to a reckless approach by draining taxpayers' money but also has chosen means that raises several doubts behind the intent of the proposal.

Meanwhile, the ruling party in BMC, BJP and Shiv Sena were in favour of the plan and passed it with a majority.

The most important reason behind the opposition's stance for the issue is that they allege that the civic body intends to spend a whopping ₹6 crore to improve its social media presence.

The opposition argued that the civic body was wasting the taxpayers' money as there already is an IT cell in BMC and it has a big budget allocated for the same. They also added that instead of bringing outsiders, the civic body must train its current team to do a better job.
