The BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) has reportedly arranged 3,343 rooms across 88 hotels in Mumbai as quarantine facilities for those returning from countries like Bangladesh, Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, UK (London) and the U.S. (San Francisco) as per a senior BMC official.

The BMC has reportedly tapped into hotel chains like Oyo, which are said to be included among the 88 hotels listed by the authorities. It’s also important to note that those choosing to be quarantined at these facilities will have to pay for the services. These rooms are expected to accommodate nearly 1,900 passengers landing into Mumbai.

These passengers will arrive on special Air India evacuation flights under the “ Vande Bharat Mission” put in place to bring back stranded Indians. Air India will undertake 64 special flights between May 7 and 13 which will bring back a total of 14,800 passengers across India.

“BMC has arranged 3343 rooms in 88 hotels to quarantine people returning from various countries, in the coming few days. 14800 people are to be brought back to India on 64 special flights starting 7th May. Out of these, 7 flights are to come to Mumbai with 1900 passengers," a statement said.

Starting Thursday, Air India sent flights to the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Maldives, and Singapore to bring back Indians. While one would say these facilities were provided a little too late in the day, Air India sent flights to European destinations in March to bring back stranded students and passengers. On the other hand, several private citizens have paid a heavy price for tickets back to India before the March 18 travel restriction was announced.
