The stinking of garbage in a metropolitan city such as Mumbai has always been a huge problem. With garbage bins in open space across the city, it creates an unbearable stinking environment. However, to control the same, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to set up bins underground.

BMC plans to dig a hole for the same purpose in four different places in South Mumbai just to initiate the project. The garbage bins will have sensors to notify municipal staff when they are filled. For this, BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department on Monday carried out a tender to invite companies to install these bins.

A BMC official said that depending upon the success of the pilot project that they are going to initiate by the end of 2018, this move will be further expanded in other parts of the city.

This move might help deter the health issues that increase due to garbage in open spaces. In its budget for 2018-2019, the BMC has focused on putting smart sensor installed bins.
