In a special drive, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on February 27, initiated an action to remove 2.0 km of unauthorised cables that were dangling overhead These included utility wires from trees, poles, monorail pillars and every other conceivable perch.
Teams from D ward (Mumbai Central, Grant Road and Charni Road areas) visited with an electrician to cut off cables. Moreover, the civic body plans to carry on the drive.
The action immediately won accolades from the state Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray. "A part of our aesthetics drive for the city and suburbs, all wards of BMC are going to take down illegal overhead wires. Good going,” he tweeted.

The BMC rule book clearly states that overhead cables are illegal and should be laid underground after obtaining the required permissions. The action came after civic authorities had repeatedly asked service providers over the past few months to take the cables underground.
The dangling overhead cables are a threat to oversize motor vehicles as well as flying birds but are preferred over trenching as it involves no road excavation and reinstatement.
