Amid the coronavirus scare in Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) wants a special sanction of funds from 25 lakh up to 10 crores. The BMC also tabled a proposal to pay out the additional funds to its officials including the additional municipal commissioner and the ward level officers. These funds are meant to meet the demands amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The funds which the BMC seeks are to be used for several requirements including making stamps for the patients who are under self-quarantine or home quarantine Along with this, the money will be used for masks and sanitisers for the civic body staff and for the beds of the patients admitted in the hospitals.

According to a Times of India report, the BMC wants to allocate 5 crore to 10 crores to additional municipal commissioners, 1-5 crore to two deputy municipal commissioners. Along with this, the civic body intends to give 25 lakh to ward-level officers.

A senior BMC official informed that the health workers and doctors have been going house-to-house to track suspected cases of the novel coronavirus or COVID-19. For this, the health workers and doctors need masks, sanitiser and gloves. “We need additional funds and this is why the proposal was brought before the committee,” the official said.

The BMC has also prepared an additional 500 to 1000 beds in the Seven Hills Hospital and has asked to initiate additional services amid the coronavirus outbreak. This is being done to ease the burden since Kasturba Hospital in Mumbai is the only infectious diseases hospital with 120 patients as of now.

With the increasing cases of coronavirus, the BMC has started screening the travellers coming from a foreign country and those at risk are sent to the Seven Hills Hospital for a risk profile evaluation. The civic body has also started testing travellers with high-risk but no symptoms of coronavirus.
