On Monday, October 18, the Urban Development Department of the state government led by Shiv Sena has granted two additional increments to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials, who have completed post-graduation in Marathi subject. It will benefit nearly 1,489 civic employees.

A government official stated that it was in 2010 when the BMC took the decision of increment to ensure 100% usage of the Marathi language in day-to-day life. However, in 2015 the implementation was stopped as the sixth pay commission came into force. It had increased the financial burden on the civic body.

Shiv Sena legislator Sunil Prabhu had written to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray, asking them to extend the implementation till 2018, as the BMC officials who have completed their post graduation can get their benefits.

After receiving instructions from the CM, an urgent meeting was held with the civic body to consider the issue, following which the decision was taken to give increments. This decision will be implemented soon.

This move is considered significant as the civic body, and other local body polls are set to be held next year. Last week, in a review meeting chaired by Uddhav Thackeray, a decision was taken to construct a Marathi Bhasa Bhavan at Marine Drive.
