A Marathi Bhasha Bhavan will be set up at Marine Drive. The construction will begin from December 2021 and is likely to be over in the next 18 months. The decision to set up the Marathi Bhasha Bhavan was taken in a review meeting held on Tuesday, October 12. It was chaired by the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

The construction for Maharashtra Bhasha Bhavan Main Centre is proposed on a free plot at Marine Drive. It would be set up at the sea-facing Jawahar Bal Bhavan. An official, while addressing the same, said that they had invited bids to select the architect and four architects gave a presentation at the meet.

The Bhavan will bring the Marathi language department's four offices who will conduct programmes linked to the Marathi language. A plot of 2,500 square metres has been transferred by the government for the construction of Bhavan, said Shiv Sena leader and Marathi Language Minister Subhash Desai.

Reportedly, instead of the Public Works Department (PWD), the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) is selected as an implementing agency for the project.

A Shiv-Sena leader, while praising the Thackeray-led government, said that this government has taken multiple decisions showing commitment to Marathi and doesn't do lip service to it. They have taken decisions that have helped in the development of the Marathi language, he added.
