The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) gives free sewing machines and domestic flour mills to poor and women in need but now the civic body has decided to credit money directly to the bank accounts of such women. However, this move has not gone down well with the standing committee who had opposed the move.
Rather than providing a sewing machine to poor and women in need, BMC had made a proposal to transfer money directly into their account.
According to the government's resolution released on December 5, 2016, items supplied by government schemes cannot be bought directly, but the beneficiaries buy it themselves. Following the government’s order, the BMC has now proposed to send INR 17,000 instead of domestic flour mills and INR 10,000 instead of sewing machines to the women whose Aadhaar cards are linked to their bank accounts.
Shiv Sena's Rajul Patel has strongly opposed it as he says that women will not get any benefit from this move and the civic body instead should give Xerox machines to women and they suggested that in such a situation, the machine should not be sold to others or rented out to others.
