Second Sero Survey: BMC to conduct random testing to determine antibodies

The second sero survey was conducted in Mumbai in August and it shows that 45 per cent of the people in slums are exposed to COVID-19. Meanwhile, 18 per cent of the people outside slums are exposed to the coronavirus.

Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had conducted the first sero survey in July which showed that 57 per cent of the people in slums were exposed to COVID-19 while 16 per cent in non-slum pockets.

Although the second sero survey was conducted in the same wards, the reason for the decline in the percentage of people exposed to COVID-19 could be because an entirely different population was selected.

The BMC had conducted the first survey in F North (Matunga), R North (Dahisar) and M West (Chembur) on 6,936. The second sero survey was also conducted in the same ward covering 5,384 people.

In the second survey, a different locality in the same ward was selected for slums while the locality remained same for non-slum areas. It is learnt that around one to two per cent of samples belonged to people who had participated in both the surveys.

Meanwhile, the BMC has decided to conduct random tests to determine the types of antibodies developed among people who have been surveyed. In association with the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the civic body will compare the presence of two antibodies - anti-spike antibody RBD and anti-nucleocapsid antibodies.

The detection of antibodies is necessary to understand the widespread presence of coronavirus infection and the flow of immune response. The anti-nucleocapsid antibodies are generally generated earlier and don’t last long while RBD antibodies have more capability to offset the virus and are developed later.

The random selection of the samples from surveyed people will be done to test for RBD antibodies.
