Mangroves to be planned on a 10-hectare area in Vikhroli

Officials from the government have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Western Company for the cultivation of mangroves on an area of 10 hectares in Vikhroli, Mumbai. A budget of INR 33 lakh will be provided by the company and additional INR 4 lakh will be provided by the Mangrove Foundation.

Marking the occasion, the official website of the same was inaugurated by Forest Minister Sanjay Rathore. Reports state the Maharashtra Security Force had ensured the security of these lands, however, a security guard named Tushar Awhad, passed away on September 22, 2020, while on duty. He was infected with coronavirus, and keeping this in mind officials from the department have announced a compensation and immediate assistance of INR 2 lakh to the families of these guards, under these situations

Furthermore, since the Sanjay Gandhi National Park's is located in the heart of Mumbai, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has directed the officials to emphasise the plan on building international standard facilities, following which the Minister of Forests, Sanjay Rathore, has asked the Public Works Department (PWD) to complete these tasks by the end of December 2020.

Present at the meeting were Principal Secretary Milind Mhaiskar, Chief Conservator of Forests Arvind Apte, Joint Secretary Gajendra Narwane, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Virendra Tiwari, Deputy Conservator of Forests Ninu Somraj, Divisional Forest Officer DR Patil along with State Forest Chief Dr N. Rambabu, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Nitin Kakodkar and others.
