In the next three years, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to construct 22,774 toilet seats which will be housed in two and three storey structures. The civic body officials said that the estimated cost of the project will be ₹536 Cr and will be focussed on slum pockets across 24 municipal wards in the city.

One of the officials from Solid Waste Management, who happens to be a part of Slum Sanitation Programme (SSP) said that amongst other wards, M (east) ward in Chembur will receive the most number of public toilets. He added that South Mumbai’s A, B, C, and D will no benefit much from the project as the density of slums in lower.

A civic official said that in 2017, the civic body had set a target of building 5,000 toilet seats and completed 80 per cent of the work. He added that by going vertical, they will be able to build more toilets. He further said that once constructed toilets will be handed over to Community Based Organisations (CBO) and said that they will appoint a committee of slum dwellers who will look after the maintenance and cleaning.
