Balasaheb Thackeray is regarded to be one of the most prominent figures in the history of Maharashtra politics. From being a cartoonist to being a mass influencer, Bal Thackeray is revered by young and old alike in the state. After years of delay, finally, the construction of the Bal Thackeray Memorial may begin soon. However, as per the reports, it is stated that the memorial will now be built underground.
According to the reports, there will be no structural changes to the Mayor’s Bungalow in Shivaji Park and the memorial will be constructed underground. The mayor’s house has been certified as a grade II-B heritage site. The new underground facility will be spread across 9,000 sq ft area under the bungalow.

Accordingly, the bungalow’s lawn along with the underground land of the bungalow will be available for construction. Besides this, the memorial will also consist of a water body around the structure and will be the sole over-the-ground structure in front of the bungalow. Whereas the entrance height of the memorial has been reduced from 1.5 meters to 1.2 meters.

The new Bal Thackeray Memorial plan has been devised by architect Abha Narain Lambah who has designed the entire new memorial blueprint. On the south-east corner of the scheme, there has been a proposed open parking space which will aid the vehicles for parking.
A Shiv Sena leader said that the memorial will flaunt the glimpses of Thackeray’s life and times. He also added that Uddhav Thackeray, the Shiv Sena chief had expressed that he didn’t want to disturb the Mayor’s bungalow and yet make the memorial, a good one due to which the memorial was made underground.
The state government had announced about the memorial on November 17, 2015. While the government had suggested a few potential sites where the memorial could be built, Uddhav Thackeray had insisted on building the memorial at the mayor’s bungalow at Shivaji Park, Dadar.
