The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is expected to undertake a survey to discern the number of homeless people in Mumbai after the Shelter Monitoring Committee (appointed by the Supreme Court) raised questions about the conclusions of an earlier study, reports stated. The previous study put the number of homeless people in Mumbai at 11,915 with a population of nearly 1.24 crore people.
On Thursday, December 16, the civic body is reported to have floated an Expression of Interest to appoint an agency to undertake the study of the homeless in the city. The agency, based on reports, is anticipated to undertake the survey by means of a mobile app.
In an effort to address the issue of homelessness in the city a survey will be conducted to map their locations on GIS based digital system.

The locations of all the homeless will be geotagged and biometric registration will be undertaken. A web-based portal will then be made the agency which will include the number of homeless and the number of shelters for them.
According to the account, the project is slated to cost INR 25 lakh and the agency will have 90 days to finish their work. Upon the completion of the study, a policy will be curated for the empowerment of the homeless.
Additionally, narratives claim that the BMC is expected to commence four new shelter homes at Andheri, Chandivali, Dahisar and Govandi. Back in October, on the occasion of World Homeless Day, the civic body had initiated a helpline number for the homeless.
