The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has readied a prototype of a stainless-steel grille which will be installed on more than 74,000 manholes in a phased manner. In addition to this, the tendering process for safety nets is also expected to start soon.

This development came following Bombay high court’s (HC) order to come up with ‘simple and temporary’ measures to cover open manholes. It was in response to BMC's statement which mentioned that it will take at least a year to install protective grilles on all 74,682 manholes across the city.

The BMC officials said that this prototype will be installed below the manhole cover. Previously, ductile metal in the protective grille was used but now, the new prototype is being made using stainless steel. The life of the iron grille will be longer because of the stainless-steel material.

The civic officials are currently deciding the cost of the grilles which will cover all the manholes in Mumbai.

It is pertinent to note that the BMC will soon install smart manhole covers at 14 places in the city. In its pilot project, the civic body will commence with 11 spots in low-lying areas that have waterlogging issues.

These manhole covers will be monitored by CCTV cameras. This will help prevent the theft of manhole covers and overflowing drains. BMC is going to spend INR 11.50 lakh on this pilot project.
