To address water shortages in Mumbai’s western suburbs from Goregaon to Dahisar, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has proposed installing zonal water meters. These meters will help detect leakages, monitor uneven supply, and quickly identify areas with low pressure for timely repairs.
Despite sufficient water reserves in the city’s seven lakes, areas like Magarpatta (West), Dahisar, Kandivali (West), and Marve in Malad have faced low water pressure for the past four months, causing complaints of scarcity and contamination.
Central Minister Piyush Goyal reviewed the situation and noted that some areas are receiving water at a pressure of 40–45, whereas it should be 60–65, leading to inadequate supply.
Local representatives, including Borivali MLA Sanjay Upadhyay, demanded equitable distribution of water. Officials stated that daily water supply is about 4,000 million liters, but 34% (1,400 million liters) is lost due to leakages and theft. The new meters aim to improve monitoring and address these issues promptly.
