The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to organise special camps in colleges to vaccinate teenagers in the age group of 15-18 years.

This development came days after PM Modi announced that children between 15 and 18 years of age can be vaccinated starting January 3.

The corporation has got in touch with the vice-chancellor of Mumbai University for checking with colleges so that a drive can be arranged on college premises when the vaccination kicks off.

Moreover, the civic body has directed all ward officers to make a list of eligible beneficiaries in each ward.

Officials said they will get cracking once the Centre's guidelines are out and the vaccine stock, which is to be administered, is released.

The focus will be on children once the ICMR guidelines are in place and the Centre is ready with a blueprint to vaccinate children between 15 and 18 years of age. Moreover, if there is a get good quantity of vaccines then all centres will be activated but in case of less quantity, few centres will be started, said Suresh Kakani, Additional Municipal Commissioner.

Meanwhile, the data of children in each ward is being collected and the civic body will also be ascertaining how many of them have comorbidity, he added.

According to officials, there are nearly nine lakh children in the 15-18 years’ age category. The civic body said that even with current infrastructure it can speed up the vaccination drive. However, the pace will depend on the availability of vaccines. Currently, in Mumbai, there are nearly 400 vaccination centres including government and private ones.
