After facing flak from the people in 2018 regarding its passiveness towards the issue of potholes in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to produce the material on its own to avoid ruckus and fill the potholes as soon as possible. Therefore, the civic body will produce 1,200 metric tonne of cold mix, starting this month.

Earlier, BMC had envisioned to produce 2,500 metric tonne of cold mix by the end of 2018 but due to the tender procedure and lack of raw material caused an unnecessary delay in the production.

As per the municipal corporation officials, they will stop the production of the cold mix by the end of April this year. The civic body has also prepared the list of faulty roads in various wards and has accordingly based the production of cold mix. Therefore, the concerned ward officials will have to prepare a report as they fill the potholes in their areas and present it before the BMC.

BMC receives complaints about the potholes through their official website http://www.mcgm.gov.in as well as their dedicated toll-free helpline number. In response, the civic body is directed to take necessary action within 48 hours. In 2018, BMC had issued a circular which asked its engineers to compact the components of the potholes if the depth of the pothole exceeds 25 mm.

While this year, BMC has decided to make the material on its own, earlier they used to import the material from Austria and Israel. Therefore, where they had to pay Israel, ₹170 per kg for the mixture, the BMC will be producing the material at mere ₹28 per kg accordingly.
