As a part of its plan for the academic year 2019-20, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) Education department has decided to offer it school students with counselling. The civic body has already begun the recruitment of full-time psychologists. BMC has compelled the psychologists to have a Masters Degree in Psychology.

The municipal corporation will appoint 60 counsellors for its government-run school students. Accordingly, it will appoint five counsellors across the Urban Research Centres (URC) under which, each individual counsellor will look over 20 schools.

The reason behind appointing the counsellors is because the majority of students come from an economically-weaker section where they face social and economic issues at a young age.

Thus, the psychologists will look after the cognitive as well as the social development of the students. Accordingly, separate funding of rs.1.5 crore has been allotted for the psychologists. The final announcement for the same will be made by the end of March this year.
