An additional INR 27.07 crores will be spent by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Mumbai's first underground water tank that is being constructed to prevent flooding in the low-lying Hindmata area.

The water tank will be storing the rainwater. Officials have said that the fund will be spent for water tank construction below Pramod Mahajan Park in Dadar west.

The BMC started the construction work of two underground water tanks at Pramod Mahajan Park in Dadar and St Xavier Ground in Parel. They have also constructed a pumping station in the space below the Hindmata flyover. It was done to push the water to both storage tanks through a newly-laid pipeline network using pumps.

According to the proposal, the BMC did not invite a fresh tender for tank construction below Pramod Mahajan Park. They awarded the contract to a contractor executing repair and construction work on stormwater drain outfall in Dadar and Dharavi that cost the civic body INR 44.04 crores.

The administration has decided to appoint the same contractor to finish the underground tank, awarding a contract worth INR 27.07 crores. The project will now cost INR 71.12 crores.

The proposal of the additional expenditure will be tabled before the standing committee on Thursday, November 18.

The BMC officials have stated that the tanks will be able to store the rainwater for four hours during heavy rains.
