On Wednesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) told the Bombay High Court, that a total of 1,317 bed-ridden individuals have been inoculated at their homes in the city. In addition to this, not even one case of a negative reaction has been reported to date, cited in a report by the PTI.

On July 30, the door-to-door vaccination drive began in Mumbai wherein with assistance from an NGO, 37 people were vaccinated.

Based on an affidavit filed by Mangala Gomare, the executive health officer of the BMC, in the HC, till August 9, 2021, 1,317 bed-ridden people have been vaccinated during the door-to-door inoculation drive. Similarly, no occurrences of adverse events post the vaccination have been reported.

This affidavit was given in reply to a PIL filed by advocates, pursuing a course to the Centre government to commence a similar drive for those above 75 years of age, specially-abled, bed-ridden or wheelchair confined. Their petition stated how the above-mentioned people cannot go to the vaccination centres.

According to reports, the Union government had earlier highlighted its incapacity to commence such a door-to-door drive claiming risks of adverse reaction and wastage of vaccine. However, the Maharashtra government last month stated that it would commence this drive and framed a policy for it. It was then commenced in Mumbai.

BMC’s affidavit states that 4,889 bed-ridden citizens had registered for vaccination at home as of August 9.

The affidavit also states August 2, 2021, onwards, home vaccination commenced in all 24 wards in Mumbai. The citizens whose homes will be visited are called to keep certificates ready. Then a two-member team that includes a doctor and a nurse is dispensed in each ward, equipped with an ambulance and a kit, states the account.

The BMC stated that it sought the help of NGOs in certain wards for manpower, life support and ambulance.

On Thursday, the petition will be heard by Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice G S Kulkarni.
