A proposal to waive property tax for houses with an area of more than 700 square feet was turned down by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Unable to take any decision on the issue, the civic administration said that they had not received any directions from the Maharashtra government on waiver for such housing units.

In 2018, BJP MP and corporator Manoj Kotak had moved the proposal and was cleared in the civic general body. Following this, it was sent to the municipal commissioner for a decision.

Kotak's proposal will be tabled in the general body meeting by next week. While responding to Kotak's proposal, the administration said that the decision to waiver property tax comes under the Maharashtra government's jurisdiction. They can only consider the proposal after receiving direction from the state government.

The corporator, in his proposal, sought relief from the high property tax. His proposal stated that the people of Mumbai can not afford to pay increased property taxes. The increased tax had led to people leaving Mumbai.

In the 2017 BMC polls, Shiv Sena had promised a complete property tax waiver for houses up to 500 square feet. The same has been implemented. BJP has criticized Sena for 'following' people property tax waiver for houses up to 500 square feet since only general tax was waived.

They had also promised a rebate for units having an area of more than 700 square feet in their manifesto. However, the proposal is yet to see a light.
