According to reports, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appealed to the citizens to take permission and prune trees in their residential premises.

This comes after the civic body had awarded contracts for tree-pruning across the city. Meanwhile, the cost of trimming trees will depend on the type and girth of the tree and has to be borne by the housing societies. In recent developments, several activists and corporators have been demanding that the cost of pruning trees should be borne by the corporation, however, the BMC has refused to do so.

Due to the cyclonic storm Tauktae last week, around 1,000 trees were uprooted as the branches of several thousand trees fell. On the other hand, the BMC has reportedly selected contractors to trim trees across the city at a cost of INR 37 crores for a year.

Last year, the monsoon officially arrived in Mumbai on June 14 instead of the normal onset date of June 11. A fairly well distributed and timely monsoon could have a massive positive impact with regards to the production of crops and one less reason to worry for an economy battling the second wave of the coronavirus. Furthermore, back in April, private weather forecasting agency, Skymet had also said that the southwest monsoon in 2021 is likely to be ‘normal’ at 103 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA).

The season of monsoons happens to be very crucial for agriculture as the summer crops depend on India’s annual rainfall for abundant growth. It happens to be very important for the agriculture of the country, which is one of the mainstays of its economy.
