According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Tauktae and the system currently forming in the Bay of Bengal is unlikely to have an impact on the rains during the monsoon season this year.

Moreover, the model forecast shows arrival between June 4-10 in the state. Last year, the monsoon officially arrived in Mumbai on June 14 instead of the normal onset date of June 11. Meanwhile, above-average rainfall in Maharashtra can be expected this year. The state had received good rainfall last year as well. Vidarbha, Marathwada, South Konkan and Western Maharashtra are expected to receive 35 to 55 per cent above average rainfall.

Meanwhile, a fairly well distributed and timely monsoon will mean another year of bumper farm production in 2021, which could have a massive positive impact and one less reason to worry for an economy battling the second wave of the coronavirus. Furthermore, back in April, private weather forecasting agency, Skymet had also said that the southwest monsoon in 2021 is likely to be ‘normal’ at 103 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA).

The season of monsoons happens to be very crucial for agriculture as the summer crops depend on India’s annual rainfall for abundant growth. It happens to be very important for the agriculture of the country, which is one of the mainstays of its economy.
