The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has invited bids to include waste picking organizations in the process of garbage segregation at waste dumping/unloading sites. This will aid waste management organizations that can then sell the segregated dry waste to the recyclers.

The civic body has sent out an Expression of Interest (EOI) reaching out to registered waste picking organizations to carry out works at the Deonar dumping ground and four refuse transfer stations at Gorai, Kurla, Mahalaxmi, and Versova Lagoon.

Organizations involved in this project will segregate dry or non-biodegradable waste from the unloaded solid waste at municipal dumping grounds and transfer stations. The organizations can then send the segregated waste to the recyclers.

BMC believes that segregating the waste will cut down the amount of waste transferred at civic disposal sites. Mumbai collects 6000 metric tonnes of solid waste each day. The appointed organizations will segregate dry waste such as paper, plastic, e-waste, glass, etc which can be recycled.

Minesh Pimple, Deputy Chief Engineer, Solid Waste Management (Projects) said, “Several organizations work for waste pickers in Mumbai. The BMC will not have to spend money on paying the organization. Agencies can segregate dry waste and sell it directly to recyclers. The move will help uplift the lives of waste pickers as they will directly get the benefits without any middleman.”
