Indians will soon be celebrating one of the much-awaited festivals of the year, Diwali. This year, the celebrations would be simple and low-key, but the entire nation is eagerly waiting for the same, after a not-so-happy 2020. This year's Diwali brings in some good news for the employees at the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

As per reports, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar, on November 2, 2020, has given good news to the employees who have been waiting for Diwali bonus for the last few days. It is said that she announced to give a bonus grant of INR 15,500 to all the employees of BMC this year, and as per official data, the amount has increased in comparison to the previous year.

Over one lakh employees are working in various departments of the BMC and although coronavirus has affected the income of the corporation, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had clarified that bonus should be given to the employees who have tirelessly worked during the crisis, by risking their own. Keeping the same in mind, the officials have decided to release the bonus for its employees.

Further, the Municipal Union had earlier demanded a bonus, i.e., 20 per cent of their income, for all BMC workers and employees for the year 2019-20, thereby offer a bonus of INR 50,000. Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, Mayor Kishori Pednekar and representatives of the unions had held a meeting on the proposal of both the unions, post-which it has been decided that the BMC will give INR 15,500 to its employees, INR 7,750 to teachers and non-teaching staff of subsidized private schools, and INR 4,400 will be given to social health volunteers as a gift for Bhau Bij. 

Sharing more information, Mayor Kishori Pednekar said that though the financial condition of the corporation is not very good, the officials have tried their best to get more bonuses for the employees of the corporation who work generously during the COVID-19 crisis, and the aim has been to ensure they have a Happy Diwali.
