Days ahead of Bakri Eid, which will be celebrated on Sunday, July 10, the Bombay High Court (HC) has allowed to grant permission to operate temporary places of slaughter.

This development came after the court directed the Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporation (BNMC) to follow the BMC’s policy as it did not have any licensed and recognised abattoir within its area and to ensure conditions and guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court (SC) and High Court are properly complied with.

The Bombay HC had also asked the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to inform it as to how the civic body would put in place a supervisory mechanism to ensure effective implementation of the policy for slaughtering of sacrificial animals during the festival.

On Tuesday, July 5, a bench of Justices AK Menon and MS Karnik allowed the BNMC to grant permission after the corporation informed the HC that it had adopted the policy in line with that of the BMC for granting permission for temporary places of slaughter.

The court has also asked the Maharashtra government to ensure that necessary police protection is provided to ensure that no law and order situation arises.

The government pleader ensured the HC that it will provide necessary police protection wherever required. Also, the certain places where the CCTV cameras were not functional, will be made operational.
